Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how societies and economies function, presenting both opportunities and challenges for National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and International Organisations. On the one hand, NSOs must adapt their operations to ensure that their data is AI-ready: structured, standardised, and interoperable for integration into AI systems. On the other, AI offers a powerful means to improve the efficiency and quality of statistical processes and products. Beyond internal transformation, NSOs bear the responsibility of producing data to monitor and analyse how AI is impacting societies and economies, providing the necessary evidence for policy decisions and public debate.
The joint KOSTAT-OECD International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Official Statistics will address a range of interconnected issues by bringing together statisticians, policymakers, and AI experts to examine the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the field of official statistics. The discussions will focus on recent innovations, practical applications, and the challenges of maintaining data integrity, quality, and public trust in this evolving landscape. Furthermore, the Conference will lay the groundwork for a forward-looking initiative aimed at translating these discussions into concrete actions through continued research and the implementation of key recommendations.
